Shoaling with infected conspecifics does not improve resistance to trematode infection
2018
Group‐living animals can gain protection against parasitic infections through social contacts with previously infected conspecifics (social immunization). Recent research suggests that such protective effects can be induced through visual or chemical cues released by infected individuals, resulting in anticipatory immune upregulation among group members. Here, we study cue‐induced social resistance in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss exposed to a trematode parasite, the eye‐fluke Diplostomum pseudospathaceum. We established groups of naïve individuals (receivers) that were paired with previously infected individuals (donors) at different ratios of donors to receivers and at different time …
Efficacité interne de l'enseignement primaire aux pays de la Communauté Economique des Pays des Grands Lacs (CEPGL) : question approfondie sur le Rwa…
2011
This PhD study has been achieved with objective to carry out the level of internal efficiency of the primary education in the CEPGL countries and the progress reaches toward the education for all after the period of ethnic and armed conflicts. In addition, specifically for Rwanda, to underline the individual, families and school factors explanatory of the repetition and drop-out in the primary schools. The data of our analysis come from different reports of ministries, international organizations and publications of researchers. The analysis of the primary education inside CEPGL countries, by the indicators that document education supply and demand, show that, after the period of conflicts,…
El proyecto mapa escolar de Valencia: Análisis de la zonificación educativa de la ciudad de Valencia
2018
The research project Mapa Escolar de Valencia (School Map of Valencia) was born out of an agreement between the City Council and the University of Valencia in order to carry out an investigation of the compulsory education system of the city and propose, if necessary, modifications to the current school zoning. The project is structured in several research areas. An analysis of the specialized scientific literature and public policies concerning education and schooling has been done, and it is currently analysing the evolution of quantitative and qualitative data on compulsory schooling in Valencia, its school zoning, the representations of education and the school climate in the city schoo…
What happens at the lesson start?
2016
AbstractTransitional periods, such as lesson starts, are necessary steps from one activity to another, but they also compete with time for actual learning. The aim of the present study was to replicate a previous pilot study on lesson starts and explore possible disturbances. In total, 130 lesson starts in Finnish basic education in grades 1–9 were studied using systematic observation performed by 79 preservice teachers. The results corresponded with a previous pilot study indicating that lesson starts were generally orderly and teachers used effective means to manage events. However, lessons started 5 min late on average. Male teachers were evaluated to have better classroom order than fem…
What Makes for Fair Schooling?
2007
Slogans calling for “une ecole juste” (fair schooling) are often as vague as they are effective in mobilising public opinion: though there is apparent agreement on the desirability of greater fairness in education, the matter of defining fair schooling parameters is extremely complex and riddled with ambiguity.
Predicting children's mathematical performance in grade one by early numeracy
2010
Abstract This longitudinal study examined how children's early numeracy assessed in kindergarten predicts their mathematical performance in the first grade, after controlling for the effects of age, gender, and parents' education. The participants were 212 Finnish children (107 girls and 105 boys). At the time of the first assessment (kindergarten), the mean age was six years, and the second assessment was conducted one year later. The results demonstrate that the acquisition of counting and relational skills before formal schooling are predictive of the acquisition of basic arithmetical skills and overall mathematical performance in grade one, above and beyond the effects of demographic fa…
Returns to Schooling in Spain. How Reliable Are IV Estimates?
2001
This paper studies the Ordinary Least-Squared (OLS) and Instrumental Variables (IV) estimates of the returns to schooling for male workers in Spain. OLS estimates are often biased due to the endogeneity of schooling, measurement errors or omitted variables. Proper IV estimates correct this bias. The reliability of family background, natural experiments (based on changes in the education system and season of birth) and the availability of a college in the province is checked using Spanish data. The results suggest that background and college availability are valid instruments and that the IV estimates of the returns to schooling are higher than OLS estimates. These results are in line with t…
La perception des parcours d’études non linéaires par les recruteur·euse·s
2020
Employer’s hiring behavior is changing and educational qualifications alone are not enough to explain hiring of graduates. In France, more and more young people drop out and return to full-time study. Therefore, they gain different life experiences outside the sphere of work: travel abroad, period of employment, civic services, etc. Yet, there was little research on this topic in France. This study explores the relationship between atypical schooling pathways and labour market entry from the perspective of employers. On the basis of vignette study, we stimulated a hiring process with a sample of recruiters. A study delay (Master level) was a negative brand in applicants’ resumes if experien…
Effects of a French remedial program on pupils’ educational outcomes
2018
International audience; Few studies have examined the French “Networks for Specialized Assistance to Pupils in Difficulty” (Rased). In this article, we evaluate the impact of receiving Rased services in the first year of primary schooling on academic success. Using data from a national panel study, we find inconsistency in student selection within Rased. Using matching methods, our results reveal that pupils who benefited from the program school have a higher probability of grade repetition and obtain significantly lower scores on the third grade national assessment, particularly in mathematics, compared to pupils with similar characteristics who did not take part in the program. This impac…
